A giant of a man, with long, wild unruly hair and a very long ginger beard was not who you wanted to see on the horizon striding like a demented scarecrow towards the farmhouse! Mad Halifax, a parson’s son who could tell you all you ever wanted to know about Norman and Saxon churches yet struck complete terror amongst the women and children. No bread or pie was safe as his huge nose could sniff out the fresh baking as it cooled in the farmyard from miles away, a momentary turn of the back and the cunning Halifax would have those pies and be off! Memories of the terrifying Mad Halifax lasted long in the minds of the children of the Wold’s farmsteads and tales of his antics are what legends are made of – setting huge fires to make tea in a bucket, sneaking into the loose boxes to steal the kit bags from fellow Rangers as they slept and pinching sandwiches from petrified children as he lurked in the shadows near the schools.
He finally got his comeuppance when a young farm lad, George Nellist, unwittingly plunged his pitchfork into a great mound of hay only to find the staggering sight of Mad Halifax, hair waving wildly and ginger beard strewn with hay, emerge without a stitch on, having got caught in a storm the previous evening and had taken his raggedy attire off to dry!
