Garton

Garton on the Wolds is a quaint Wolds village steeped in history, boasting a beautiful 12th-century church adorned with unique Victorian wall paintings, and surrounded by rolling hills and picturesque landscapes.

Here are our favourite facts about Garton:

- The Church of St Michael and all Angels has the most magnificent wall murals which were produced in 1865 and cover almost the entirety of the interior of the church and present a series of scenes from the bible.
- Garton was served by the Malton and Driffield Junction Railway from 1846 until 1950, when passenger traffic ceased. The station itself was located to the south of the village. Freight continued on the line until 20 October 1958. Today, you can learn more about this historic railway line by visiting the Yorkshire Wolds Railway – East Yorkshire's only Heritage Railway attraction
- Archeological evidence has been found that shows habitation in Garton from about 12,000 years ago. Burial mounds containing chariots were found during gravel excavations and artefacts have been discovered from Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age into Roman times.
